Cross references allow them to quickly jump to a referenced paragraph, table, or graphic. Ditto footnotes.

If your document has a lot of tables and graphics, a list of those again takes the reader to the relevant item at the click of a button.

Want to insert a numbered paragraph? Click in the document and press the carriage return to insert the next number.

Need to move a paragraph that includes a cross reference, or a footnote number? Just do it. Word will automatically update the links and renumber the footnotes if necessary.

Insert another table or graphic, and have the lists also update automatically. You can update the table of contents at any time with just one command.
